8 Days of Difference

Day 1

 

Today take the time to connect with nature and why we need to care for her.

Unless you can connect back with nature and understand how you personally are impacting her, you will revert back to your old ways of making excuses and redirecting blame.

 

Take the time today to complete the following exercises; 

 

Remove your shoes and stand on the true surface of Earth.  Allow your toes to move in the grass, soil, sand or snow.  This, is the earth that feeds you. 

 

Look up at the sky and breathe in its vast reach.  This, is the atmosphere that protects you. 

 

Notice a trees leaves swaying in the breeze or maybe see a sprout burning through cement or a rock…. This, is your breath. 

 

Fill a glass of water and sip as you watch the rain, garden grow or maybe a baron  landscape. This, is the source of life.

 

Listen to birds sing, insects chirp or a baby cry. You are not alone. 

 

Sit down and watch a documentary with your family, friends or even on your own. I would recommend; The Story of Stuff (21.24 minutes) this one is great for the whole family and couple it with The Story of Solutions (9.02) The 11th Hour (1.21.18) This one is a little heavy, Our Planet series is also beautiful to help appreciate the beauty of our world.  If you have the film 2040 screening near you, go. This documentary presents us with the problems whilst also offering solutions.

 

 

Day 2

 

So today you are inspired and realising what effects earth and nature also effects you and your family.  This is a good thing although your heart may feel heavy with this new revelation, it will soon be burning with drive and power.

 

Todays exercise is to go from room to room and notice everything you own that is plastic. Look in cupboards, drawers, fridges, freezers, do a full inspection of your home. 

 

Take stock of plastic in your home, packaging, clothing, products, utensils, see it and  own it.

 

Look in your bins and see what you are throwing ‘away’. 

 

DON’T go and throw everything in the bin. When something is empty or needs replacing think; Do you need it, can you borrow it, can you get it secondhand, can you grow it, can I make it myself. If you need to buy; try local and packaging free.

 

Day 3

 

Learn the words “No Thank-you :)”. If you are being offered free stuff that you have absolutely no need for and using you as a vessel to land fill, just say; No Thank you. 

 

Would you like a plastic bag; “No Thank you” Take your own, grab a box from a  packer or raid the bag return cycle station out the from of the store.

 

Would you like a straw; “No Thank you” drink from the cup not had at all. 

 

Would you like your coffee in a to go cup: “No thank you” drink your coffee in the quirky coffee shop and breathe in that amazing coffee smell, if you HAVE TO drink  and walk take your own reusable cup.

 

Would you like to collect these free promotional things..: “No thank you” why do you need crap? 

 

Would you like free junk mail; “No thank you” put a No Junk Mail Thank You sticker on your mail box. 

 

Would you like your take away food in the free plastic container with free plastic cutlery and free plastic condiments; “No thank you” take your own container for  takeaway and your own cutlery.

 

Would you like your juice to go in a free plastic cup: “No thank you” take your own cup or glass jar

 

 

Day 4

 

Are you holding onto stuff you don’t need but may save someone else needing to buy more.

 

If you have three beds, 20 sets of sheets and a college at work is getting their own apartment, offer sheets.  This will divert the need for more sheets to be made. This exercise can be done with any excess you might have. Sourcing stuff directly to where it will be used rather than pushing onto charity stores insures a second life to items.

 

 

Day 5

 

Clean green. Marketing has mislead us to believe that we need a different product for every single cleaning job. This is totally untrue so lets’ clean green

 

Vinegar; plain cheap vinegar and water can clean your windows, mirrors, bench tops (not marble or granite) toilet seats, bathtubs, floors, microwave, fridge, bread boards, drains, you can even use it as a fabric softener. One product that is safe for both your family and the environment replaces countless others. 

 

Bicarbonate Soda, bicarb can be used as a dishwashing powder, deodorise carpets and refrigerators, clean toilets, ovens, tubs, hard to lift pot and baking stains.

 

Old towels cut up into cleaning rags or dish clothes gives a second life and when finished these cotton rags can be composted unlike the store clothes that cost money and landfill space. 

 

Use a cotton head mop and bucket for years of use or old socks that can be washed for replacement heads if you have a swivel mop. 

 

If you are washing synthetic clothing make sure your machine has a filter to catch micro plastics. These release in the wash (you could also purchase a guppy bag or  make a wash bag from an old linen tea towel) 

 

Hang clothes on the line to dry. If you need to use a dryer, throw in a dry cotton hand towel to lessen the time needed.

 

 

Day 6

 

Get creative, you maybe more talented than you think.  

 

Learn how you can make your own products for cleaning, makeup, shampoo, soap, reusables.  Chances are some already knows how and you can find them on youtube or in like minded groups. 

 

Learn to mend rather than throw, again youtube. 

 

Allow your mind to think in a different way to find solutions to obstacles you may encounter rather than just falling back to the “easy’ ways.  This is the most empowering part of the journey, you are not trapped by marketing and you start to see the power you have.

 

 

Day 7

 

Food; Buy what you need and use what you buy 

 

Eat from your fridge and freezer first. Before you go shopping eat what you have so  this is not wasted.

 

Have a left over dinner with family or friends. Reducing waste, being with loved ones  and spending the word, utter perfection.

 

Store food correctly. Carrots and green will wilt almost instantly if not inside a  container or cloth bag like The Swag.

 

Stop peeling organic vegetables, the skin are a power house of nutrients.

 

Make stock with scraps and share this with friends 

 

Start a compost or find an organisation that collects. 

 

Grow you own herbs, this one can be done with very little space.

Day 8

 

Shopping.  You are going to have to face this one as we have that primal urge as hunters and gathers to get stuff, but don’t let clever marketing lure you. 

 

Write a list. This will keep you from the unnecessary purchases. 

 

Stop and think; do you really need this, can you borrow it, can you get it secondhand, what will its end life look like, who made it, were they paid a fare wage and treated well. Remember every time you buy something you give approval for another five of those items to be made. 

 

Don’t rely on recycling. Recycling should be you last resort as it is not real solution rather a crutch to keep the consumer system growing.
